BANK OF MUM & DAD

D.M: My instructions were clear: do what you like but include a brass band-type break and a chamber music break squeezed in-between some jolly verses. This is possibly my favourite bank-referenced song of all time. It would have probably been better placed at the end of
the album as it has something of a climactic feel about it.

P.H: Originally written for Dancing “Dave” Pope’s This Little Badge combo but rejected because of the “potless in Islamabad” line. Their loss, our gain. Doug’s idea for the chorus outro is minty fresh. And his brass and strings interludes are delicious. One of my hates is drum machines (and click tracks) (oh, and quantizing) (and let’s not forget autotune) and this song is built up on a drum loop. To ‘humanise’ it, I cut out a few beats and fractionally moved a couple of others to loosen it up a wee bit.
Sometimes I lay back on my soft mattress of barbed wire and jagged bricks and think that if we were Blur and we released this thirty years ago it would have been number one in the hit parade (as I believe the kids call the charts these days) and the critics would unanimously opine that this was the apex of the whole Britpop era - but we’re not, it wasn’t and they don’t.
This is the perfect album opener. It’s always been my firm belief that the audience shouldn’t be kept waiting therefore an album should kick off with the very best on offer. Here it is. Back of the net!
